How long does each actually last?

A canvas sneaker worn regularly lasts roughly six to twelve months before the upper thins at the flex points and the material stains permanently. Canvas cannot be restored — once it is worn or discoloured, it stays that way.

A full-grain leather sneaker worn regularly lasts several years. The upper can be cleaned, conditioned and re-polished, and scuffs can be worked out rather than lived with.

What about comfort?

Canvas wins on day one. It is soft immediately, weighs less, and breathes freely in hot weather.

Leather wins from about week two onward. It moulds to the shape of your foot and holds that shape, where canvas simply stretches and eventually goes shapeless. A leather-lined sneaker also handles sweat better than most people expect — the problem with hot feet is usually a synthetic lining, not leather.

When is canvas the right choice?

How to make leather sneakers last
